What lens "size" do I need to take pics far away (football field) w/ my film camera? - what size lens do i need for my s1000

The soccer games are usually in the night. My camera is a Canon Rebel X.

You need something like a 300-mm lens.

Do not buy a zoom, zoom is too small to be Apeture max. (eg 5.6) you want to get as much light as possiable.
Note that a shutter speed of the crowd, the use of at least 150 (half to avoid the zoom) to the inclusion of moving vaccine.

Or, if you can not be a close-up, you can attempt a teleconverter. It is essentially a magnifying glass to the lens. You do get a 50mm to 100mm (in various strengths.) They are not as good but are cheaper.

I agree. At 300 or 500 You may also need a reason to use a tripod for slow shutter speed. The hope is, and what you can get shots completion of the action (in this case, you may not need a tripod, after all).
